Education or Wrestlemania

No more Department of Education… Yeah. Our country needs to do less oversight of education while our education system has consistently lagged behind many others. Do we really need the future electorate thinking this WWE approach to the country is the right way? Or, will the lack of education leave them thinking it is the only way? Don’t see my argument?  President Trump, a WWE Hall Fame member, used Hulk Hogan as a campaign draw.  Campaign speak and arguments without fact checking is, in many ways, akin to a WWE storyline that allows a controlled narrative. A last minute mystery opponent in the election by the Democratic Party circumventing the primary process. We wanted Steamboat, but the performance in this he election was more like Ryback. Linda McMahon confirmed as the Secretary of Education knowing the likelihood of department being abolished. Who else but a wrestling personality would take the booking job for a dead territory. Tribalism amongst young GOP voters is...

Netflix and Piledrivers?

Monday nights. For those of us lucky enough to grow up in the Memphis wrestling territory, Monday Nights have been synonymous with wrestling. As an 11 year old, my first discovery of wrestling was Memphis, but it quickly moved to include Prime Time Wrestling with Bobby the Brain Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon on Monday Nights. In the early 90s, those two worlds collided when Jerry the King Lawler joined the Prime Time panel before eventually becoming the voice of RAW with Jim Ross when WWF changed the Monday night format. The next big Monday night wrestling change happened when WCW started airing Nitro live and triggered the “Monday Night War” that provided many hours of channel changing for fans. Since Nitro started, WCW has closed. TNA briefly attempted challenging RAW on Mondays but it’s worth no more than a passing mention. Wrestling is cyclical. The business is definitely in an upswing, and this week’s Monday Night RAW debut on Netflix proved that . Uncle Trips booked an episode...

Memories Return

Well it’s that time of year again. Santa is putting on weight and getting Rudolph ready for his annual flight, and seasonal depression is visiting some of us for the holidays. It’s often said that Christmas magic is different when you lose a parent, and that’s true in a way. Personally, the death of my mother meant the death of my Christmas Spirit. This year has been different. Mom has been gone for 10 christmases now, and the good memories are finally coming back.  Memories of Christmas mornings sneaking to see what was under the tree without waking up anyone. It became a tougher challenge yearly, but what fun.  What happened that made this year different? Hell if I know, but I’m glad it did. It’s easy to let yourself get bogged down in loss, especially this time of year. Make sure you take the time to remember the good times.  Remember the movies, the music, the specials that you enjoyed with those gone on, their magic is forever there.

Holiday Hangover Pregame Plan

Ah Thanksgiving is upon us. That’s right. The fat man’s holiday. What’s that? You think that’s Halloween?  Wrong. Too much walking and limited costume options. Thanksgiving is it. Food. Football. Naps. Absolute perfection. But what to do before the big celebration of slothful behavior? Holiday specials, That’s what. And no, i don’t mean Christmas movies. However if you are burning copies of Elf, film it and become an instant new favorite for me. In case I’m not being clear, FUCK that nasty Spaghetti and Syrup eating Buddy. Ahem. Where was I? Oh yeah Thanksgiving Specials.  Start things off the only proper way, with A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. This special highlights how pushy people can ruin a holiday for others, as well as the downside of a Friendsgiving. Now that you’re pissed off at Peppermint Patty, choose the Slapsgiving episode of How I Met Your Mother and live vicariously through Marshall as he doles out punishment to Barney. Now that the aggression has been re...

Pop Culture and Politics

Polls have closed, and based on comments from multiple pundits on different news sources, influencers from pop culture played a large role in voter turnout for both political parties. The most common name credited with increasing the turnout for Trump was, without a doubt, Joe Rogan. The podcaster/MMA host/comedian, etc, waited until the day ahead of the election to effectively endorse Trump and sending members of the JRE Army to the polls in droves. By contrast, on the blue side of the aisle, actress/pop star Sabrina Carpenter has been recognized by several press outlets as the celebrity who registered the most voters for the 2024 election cycle. So, is this anything new? Well, yes and no. 2024 is hardly the first time a celebrity or celebrities have been involved in politics going back at least as far as the Rock the Vote campaign.  Where this election differed was the impact of podcasters on voters. Hearing the long-established press acknowledge the impact of this “new me...

Holiday Spirits and Monsters

As Halloween rolls around, ghosts, goblins and slutty everythings are preparing to take to the streets in search of tricks, treats and/or a damn good party. But, let’s all remember that it’s, more often than not, a favorite horror antihero or other characters from Hollywood. For me, the necessary movies to get in the holiday spirit are Monster Squad, Willy’s Wonderland and Night of The Living Dead (1990). You haven’t seen Moster Squad ( https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0093560/ ) it’s almost expected in this day and age, but you have gone way too long without knowing “Wolfman’s got nards.” This late 80s comedy/monster hybrid gave an entirely new generation exposure to the legendary Universal movie monsters Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein’s Monster, and more while having the excitement and mischief one has to expect from kids movies of the decade. Next up, the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead ( https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0100258/ ) is required viewing because it is my favorite zom...
