Pop Culture and Politics
Polls have closed, and based on comments from multiple pundits on different news sources, influencers from pop culture played a large role in voter turnout for both political parties.
The most common name credited with increasing the turnout for Trump was, without a doubt, Joe Rogan. The podcaster/MMA host/comedian, etc, waited until the day ahead of the election to effectively endorse Trump and sending members of the JRE Army to the polls in droves.
By contrast, on the blue side of the aisle, actress/pop star Sabrina Carpenter has been recognized by several press outlets as the celebrity who registered the most voters for the 2024 election cycle.
So, is this anything new? Well, yes and no.
2024 is hardly the first time a celebrity or celebrities have been involved in politics going back at least as far as the Rock the Vote campaign.
Where this election differed was the impact of podcasters on voters. Hearing the long-established press acknowledge the impact of this “new media” on the country’s new way of accessing information. The curious part will be watching if/how this trend continues.
Personally, Rogan himself is so far from the podcaster I once listened too, that his impact on this “Dude Bro Generation” reminds me more of wrestling tribalists than anything other than for Limbaugh supporters.
No matter how you cast your vote on Tuesday, this country needs to forget the hate and start to heal.
But just in case, I have my Purge list.
